United Airlines adds unlikely European destinations to its 2026 summer schedule

A United Airlines plane takes off from San Francisco International Airport on Oct. 8, 2025, in San Francisco.

In this week’s air travel news, United Airlines said it will start flying to some unexpected new transatlantic cities next summer, and will revive seasonal routes to the unlikely destinations it added this year; Los Angeles could get nonstop flights to Egypt next spring; Southwest Airlines plans to add Alaska to its route map in May, and increase service on intra-California routes; new California routes are starting up in Santa Maria, Orange County and Burbank; U.S. flight delays increase as the government shutdown continues; American Airlines removes carry-on bag sizers from gate areas; consumer protection rules for airline passengers face new challenges; Frontier Airlines implements new boarding procedures; Spirit Airlines expects to remove more than half the aircraft in its fleet.

United Airlines has revealed details of its international schedule for next summer, including plans to add some offbeat destinations across the Atlantic. Most of the new routes will operate nonstop from the airline’s hub at Newark Liberty International Airport. On April 30, United plans to launch three flights a week from Newark to Split, Croatia, located northwest of Dubrovnik along the Adriatic Sea coast. Across the Adriatic, the airline plans to begin service from Newark to Bari in southern Italy’s Puglia region on May 1 with four weekly flights. May 8 is the scheduled launch date for daily flights from Newark to Glasgow, Scotland. And on May 22, United plans to start flying from Newark to Santiago de Compostela in the northwest corner of Spain — its sixth destination in that country — three days a week. On May 21, United plans to supplement its existing service to Reykjavik, Iceland, from Newark and Chicago with new daily flights from Washington Dulles.

Elsewhere, United said it will introduce nonstop service from Newark to Seoul, South Korea, on Sept. 4 with daily 787-9 departures, adding to its existing twice-daily San Francisco-Seoul flights. And on March 28, the airline plans to add a third flight four days a week from Newark to Tel Aviv, Israel, a destination it also serves from Chicago and Washington Dulles. United’s addition of new routes to smaller destinations in Europe follows a similar international expansion by the carrier in 2025, and United said it plans to resume summer seasonal service on all those routes, including Tokyo Narita to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, starting April 30; Newark to Nuuk, Greenland, on June 6; Newark to Palermo, Italy, on May 22; Newark to Bilbao, Spain, on May 30; and Newark to Faro and Madeira Island, Portugal, on May 15 and 16.
