Two major California highways close down due to flooding

The Santa Barbara Airport flooded twice in February 2024, and the California airport released a climate change study and sought community feedback to plan for the airport’s future. 

LATEST Jan. 4, 11:30 a.m.As of 7:32 a.m. Sunday, northbound Highway 101 on the Central Coast has been reopened. The closure of the highway in both directions due to flooding from the juncture with Highway 1 to about 5 miles north of the juncture with State Route 217 started around 10 a.m. Saturday. "The #1 (left) lane of northbound US 101 near Goleta is now open," Caltrans' social media post read. "Both lanes of southbound US 101 are also now open through the area. Crews worked through the night to clear debris and will remain active today."

Numerous closures on Highway 1 throughout the Central Coast and Northern California due to flooding and washouts remain in place. The latest road closure information can be found via Caltrans. More rain is expected throughout the day on Sunday, with between a quarter of an inch and half an inch of rain possible during the daytime hours in the Santa Barbara area.
