Stanford University Dean Debra Satz and Senior Associate Dean Gabriella Safran told 23 creative writing lecturers on Aug. 21 that they would be let go over the course of the next two years following deliberation by the senior English professors about how to restructure the creative writing program.
Creative writing, a section of the English department, is one of the most popular minors at Stanford. The lecturers are part of the Jones Lectureship, a teaching appointment at Stanford created in 1946 for those who have completed the prestigious creative writing Stegner Fellowship.
According to an announcement on the creative writing program’s website, university faculty and leadership have been discussing changes to the program for two years and landed on this decision in an attempt to restore the original intent of the Jones Lectureship, which was designed with lecture positions........
