Julia Brigden, the “girl” who inspired rock stars in the 1960s and ‘70s, died in her Bay Area home on Oct. 26. She was 75.
Julia Ann Dreyer was born in Johannesburg but grew up in Sausalito after her family moved to the United States when she was a child. In the tumultuous 1960s, as sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll began dominating the San Francisco cultural scene, young Julia, known by her nickname “Girl,” was having a rebellion of her own.
“I ran away to Mexico when I was 16,” she recalled to the San Francisco Chronicle in 2007. “When I got back they were going to put me in juvenile hall until I was 21. In lieu of that, I got married.”
