A woman will receive almost $1 million after a police dog tore open her scalp as she was arrested for shoplifting in Contra Costa County nearly five years ago.
The woman, Talmika Bates, reached a settlement on Friday with the city of Brentwood, which will pay her $967,000, KPIX-TV reported.
Bates filed a lawsuit in February 2022 against Ryan Rezentes, an officer from the Brentwood Police Department, alleging that he used excessive force when a K-9 German shepherd viciously gnawed at her scalp after she was suspected of shoplifting from a cosmetic store.
