There is no place in California quite like the La Brea Tar Pits. Located in the heart of Los Angeles along busy Wilshire Boulevard, the living, belching historic site is part active research area, part working museum and part school field trip curiosity, complete with daily excavations of fossils that go back as much as 50,000 years. Yet despite over a century of active use and worldwide popularity — the tar pits are regularly identified as among the top tourist stops in LA — there have been precious few changes to the property since the mid-1970s.
Now, that’s about to change.
