Laura Dudnick, a spokesperson for the district, told reporters in Tuesday news conference that officials will stay at the bargaining table for “as long as it takes.” She did not specify a timeline for how long talks are expected to continue.
Feb. 10, 11:30 a.m. During a Tuesday press conference, San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Maria Su said the union and district officials made “meaningful progress” in Monday’s negotiations.
The two parties came to an agreement on several items including regulating artificial intelligence use and providing housing assistance for SFUSD families and students, Su said. Negotiations are still in progress for the biggest items, including salaries, health care and assistance for special education staff.
“We have very real and very serious fiscal constraints,” Su said.

Ryan Alias, a member of the bargaining committee and an English teacher at Balboa High School, told SFGATE that the district also made progress toward increased wages for classified employees, who are non-teaching staff members such as paraeducators, cafeteria workers, custodians and clerks.
“Last night, for the first time in like 11 months, the district showed a significant movement on classified compensation,” Alias said. “This is like movement that they said was impossible.”
Alias said the main issue was the district “hadn’t done their homework” on the items still in negotiation. Union members want to pause talks until they understood the “full scope” of the proposals from the district.
“That was the hang-up last night,” he said. “When we found that out, we said, ‘Well, then we need you to come to us with that detail before we can actually address anything else.’”
