A Hawaii attraction by day, haunted by death and murder at night

On Oahu, along a hidden stretch of road in Nuuanu Valley, canopied by thick trees, there’s a sharp U-shaped curve that locals know as Morgan’s Corner. It’s considered one of Hawaii’s most haunted spots, and the location carries a dark past. Over the past 100 years, it’s been the scene of death, murder and misfortune, from deadly accidents to violent crime.

By day, the road draws visitors to the popular Judd Trail, which leads hikers through bamboo forests to a pond and waterfall. By night, locals dare each other to go, retelling the urban legend of a teen couple parked there when their car wouldn’t start. The boy went for help, and by morning, the girl awoke to police surrounding the car and her boyfriend hanging upside down from the tree above.

It was the kind of story that drew me, along with a group of ghost hunters, to Morgan’s Corner one night back in 2008. The road was dark as we walked to where we thought the story might have occurred. The ghost hunters used devices to detect paranormal activity. It was eerie and quiet, and at one point, I experienced a feeling of breathlessness. Then members of our group noticed that a fully charged cellphone and some flashlights drained quickly of power. That phenomenon, one ghost hunter explained, could be an entity manifesting.

Morgan’s Corner isn’t an official name, and you won’t find it on most maps. It’s on the old Nuuanu Pali Road, which was once the main route from Honolulu to the windward side, passing over the Koolau Range, before........
