A 49ers player's wife may have just leaked the biggest free agency news yet

Dre Greenlaw of the San Francisco 49ers lines up before the snap during the game against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Dec. 22, 2024, in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Dolphins defeated the 49ers 29-17.

Sydney Warner, the wife of 49ers star linebacker Fred Warner, might soon be able to add “NFL insider” to her resume after potentially revealing the biggest piece of free agency news for the team so far.

A TikTok that Warner posted on Monday has left some Niners fans concerned about the future of fellow linebacker Dre Greenlaw. The video shows a surprise party for Mikaela Gallagher, Greenlaw’s fiancée, with an on-screen caption that reads, “POV: Your team didn’t make the playoffs and the NFL free agency is taking your best friend to another team and we are all severely unwell.”

After taking a moment to cry, a visibly emotional Gallagher then goes to hug everyone in the room and receive flowers. The post’s main caption reads, “Were all in shambles honestly,” with a weary face emoji.

Greenlaw’s contract is one of the biggest questions heading into this offseason for the 49ers. At this point last year, there would have been no question of whether to sign the hard-hitting linebacker, whose partnership with Warner made the middle of the Niners’ defense one of the scariest places in the league. However, things became a lot less clear-cut just before halftime of the Super Bowl, when Greenlaw suddenly ruptured his Achilles while running back onto the field.

The 27-year-old’s road to recovery went deep into the season. Greenlaw wasn’t activated from the physically unable to perform list until December, and he played in just two games: the first half of Week 15 against the Rams and four snaps, total, in Week 16 against the Dolphins. He’d then go on to miss the next two games.

Even with those absences, the Niners could not have had more praise for the sixth-year man upon his return, and they publicly lobbied for him to stay with the team. That’s a lot easier said than done from the front office’s perspective. The team has to navigate expiring and expendable contracts as it figures out how to pay quarterback Brock Purdy, who has certainly earned a big payday, with limited cap space from the other big contracts they’ve given to other star talent.

Maybe the decision has already been made. After all, Warner’s post does seem to indicate that Greenlaw’s time with the team has come to an end. There’s certainly always a chance that this is some WAGs in-group formality as a player contract is about to expire — there’s also so much offseason left that Greenlaw and general manager John Lynch could agree on some sort of deal — but between the post’s caption and the emotions that Gallagher showed in the video, it’s hard not to think this is a proper goodbye.
