Barbara Butler has spent nearly four decades building tree houses all across the country. But when the Hayward-based timber expert spoke to SFGATE on Tuesday, she started the call with bewilderment.
“What the heck is a sports editor wanting to call me for?” Butler asked.
The answer to that question comes courtesy of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy — and the massive tree house in his backyard.

The public first learned about the Purdy tree house just before the start of the 2024 regular season. The quarterback hosted a group of his teammates over at his house for a barbecue and enlisted Chuck Matto, a renowned pitmaster who has appeared on Food Network barbecue shows and has over 3 million followers between TikTok and Instagram, to serve the feast.
