A Waymo, a self-driving autonomous vehicle available for ride-hailing, crosses Market Street in San Francisco on May 7, 2024.
Bay Area-based autonomous driving technology company Waymo is about to become a whole lot more prevalent around Los Angeles. Starting today, Waymo has moved out of its Southern California beta-testing phase, nixing its waitlist for wide-open ride-hailing. That means that anyone can now use the Waymo app to secure a driverless ride to their destination, as long as pickup and drop-off both occur within the company’s current 79-square-mile operating radius.
Today’s announcement is good news for Waymo shareholders and for local Angelenos who have been eager to try out a ride, but it comes with one giant catch: The company’s sensor-driven Jaguar cars will still be staying off the freeways entirely.
