Opinion: Public rental housing part of answer to Sask rental shortage

There is a need for more of a grassroots voice for all types of tenants, from farmland to commercial to residential, a Saskatchewan tenants association, if you will.

The Saskatchewan NDP recently proposed The Rent Control Act (Bill 608). It introduces rent control in our province, tying the maximum rent increase to the consumer price index.

Rent control is somewhat of a foreign concept on the Canadian Prairies, as housing prices alongside rental rates have historically been quite tame compared to other Canadian markets such as Vancouver and Toronto.

The Saskatchewan NDP claim rent control will make housing more affordable for renters, and in the interim, lessen the burden of the cost-of-living crisis.
