Among the stories I enjoy reading the second day of a new year is the coverage of the various New Year’s Day polar bear dips in Canada, including the one in Port Dover. 

I’ve attended only one of these events – back in the early 1990s in my newspaper reporting days – and have always been amazed at the bravery of these souls who are prepared to jump into ice-cold water when the surface temperature is usually below zero. 

My initial thought upon seeing this event in person was the assumption that these people must be nuts. In most cases, their plunge lasts only a handful of seconds, and then they’ll wrap themselves in a warm blanket to thaw out before getting dressed into proper clothing.
