Reflections: 1926 poultry show featured 'fine-feathered' fowl

Special winners were announced in a later edition of the Stratford Mirror

Emma and Will Soeder of 216 Huron St. in Stratford sent this photo postcard of their daughter to their cousins to wish them a Happy New Year in the early 1900s. There were many chicken fanciers in the city around that time. On Jan. 15, 1926, a journalist for the Stratford Mirror newspaper attended the annual poultry show in Stratford to report on the sights, sounds and delights he experienced there. According to the article, that year’s poultry show was the 39th annual exhibition held, which the reporter declared was the most successful up to that point with a record-breaking crowd in attendance. The modern-day reader can appreciate the amount of illustrative detail written by the journalist:

“Some of them came hundreds of miles to let the people of Stratford and surrounding district see how pretty they really were. Fine feathers make fine birds in the bird kingdom as they do — at least help greatly — in the human kingdom. But it really takes a bird........
