With February being Black History Month, there was lots of attention to the struggles, progression and achievements of Blacks.
There have been monumental gains in laws, legislation, policies to secure civil liberties. Under the law we are equal with constitutional rights. These things are set down as tenets, legal statutes and political doctrines. All those edicts, decrees, rulings, proclamations, etc. make us feel good and secures in our mind that things are OK. Some even believe it’s a given everyone enjoys equal rights, privileges and justice.
It all reads great on paper. Laws, policies, legislation may change what comes out of people’s mouths in public but it won’t change what’s in a person’s heart or mind.
Any gains in the fight for equal rights are heralded as successes. None of these victories were, or continue to be, gained because they are warranted, deserved or even just. Each small win is achieved through suffering, conflict,........
