Are you being heard?

There is a big difference between hearing and listening.

Hearing is the faculty of perceiving sounds. Most of us can do that.

Listening is giving one’s attention to a sound; taking notice of and acting on what someone says. Some of us are not so good at that.

So often when we think we are listening we are actually only hearing what is said and not really connecting with what is being stated. We have opinions and it’s hard to accept another interpretation of the information being presented.

I have been accused of not always listening. I know it’s hard to imagine, right? I work very hard to focus on what is being expressed so I can respond accordingly, knowing I don’t always get it right. I have also been accused of hearing what I want to hear. It’s a constant battle to make sure I am getting the right information.
