ROBINET: The perils of social media

I’ve been thinking a lot about artificial intelligence (AI) a lot lately, and the many ways in which this technology impacts and will continue to impact all of our lives. 

Like most of the “progress” we have seen in the past century or so, AI brings with it a mixed bag of virtues and risks and it will be a long time before we can fully understand or appreciate the many ways in which it influences all of our lives. 

Like most of us, I’ve recently come to the realization that social media is one way in which all of us are at our most vulnerable in terms of being duped or misled, and as the technology becomes even more finessed, it is ever more incumbent upon us to ensure we are not propagating false narratives, particularly in the interest of promoting our own world views. 

We are living in fraught times, and political and cultural divisions can sometimes seem overwhelming, which makes it especially important to ensure we’re filling our heads (and our feeds!) with factual information. 

And sadly, boys and girls, that information is very difficult to source, particularly if we’re relying on social media to deliver it. 

That’s not to say it’s impossible to find ,and indeed, there are many news sites, both traditional and new media, that are doing their utmost to ensure that the news they’re delivering is factual. 

However, even before the days of social media, those tasked with delivering the news were always vulnerable to those with ill........
