My friend Stephen Bellinger recently posted the included interior picture of the Crump Bakery and Confectionary to the Chatham History group on Facebook.
The Crump enterprise was in the Campbell Block, most of which still exists, with the third–floor portion above the old Sunshine Restaurant removed several years ago.
The Crump business was in the space later occupied by the Sunshine Restaurant.
The Campbell Block is one of the older buildings on King Street and is two different buildings with a common front.
The building front was rebuilt in 1880 with the date block still being visible in the roof line. These common fronts were not unusual and suggest a situation of an owner obtaining an adjacent building and co-renovating it to a perceived larger size.
The street number is 156 (112, old numbering system).
The interior photo depicts the Crump staff of nine people and represents a very busy scene.
Such an enterprise would have been labour........
