RHODES: A pencil drawing of an old streetcar in Charing Cross

A short time ago my friend, Murray Jinks, sent me a copy of a black and white drawing done by his mother-in-law several years ago.

I looked at the drawing and immediately liked it and I certainly knew the subject area.

The depiction is of CW & LE No. 8 (the Lake Car) at Charing Cross.

As a model, she used a well-known photo that has been published many times including on page 47 of my book on the history of the CW & LE which was titled “Come Walking and Leave Early.”

That title was derived from the letters in the company name and the commonly held and derogatory opinion that, should you be foolish enough to board one of their accident-prone streetcars, you would probably complete your journey on foot

The date of the photo?

I am thinking that to be in the early days of the Lake Line which was completed in 1908.

The north line, or Wallaceburg branch, had been completed in 1905.

The spur to Pain Court was operating by 1909.
