RHODES: A glimpse of Chatham’s King Street in 1887

On occasion, I am remiss.

I remember showing you this photo, giving some details and promising to get back to you with additional information a few issues later.

That was six years ago.

I apologize for the delay.

Late, however, is better than never and I am sorry for my non diligence.

Here are more details.

At left, on the north side of King Street, in the background, is the three floor Northwood Block which still stands and was the longtime home of Gray’s China Hall.

On the western wall of the third floor is a mural advertisement for George Cowan Boots and Shoes. That mural is still there and is clearly visible from the upper floors of the 12-storey condo building that now stands at the upper bend.

George William Cowan was a shoe merchant who, uniquely, had two shoe stores which were located directly opposite each other.........
