Gilberts: Some 1920s concerns mirrored in today's world

Sometimes, we foolishly think that, living in today's modern world, we have little in common with Chatham-Kent residents of the 1920s.

Last week, I shared some history of a former Chatham newspaper that was included in its final publication.

The Chatham Planet operated, in one form or another, within Chatham-Kent from before 1850.

In its last edition on Dec. 30, 1922, there were a number of interesting articles that not only provided insights into the local life in the 1920s, but also brought to life some interesting facts that resonate today.

Sometimes, we foolishly think that, living in today’s modern, sophisticated and well-educated world, we have little in common with C-K residents of the 1920s. Oh, how I beg to differ!

Since the Planet and Chatham Daily News had morphed into one newspaper (The Chatham Daily News), there was a real urgency for new owner W.J. Taylor, of Woodstock, to boost readership and secure many new subscribers. To achieve this, the new owners were prepared to “put........
