Imagine my surprise when I found out that we talked about the U.S. wanting to annex Canada!
When we reprinted Christmas columns that Jim had written in 1998 a few weeks ago, I explained that the research for them had been done back when we were still doing our radio show in the 1980s. This week, in searching for an idea for a column, I came across another script from those days – January 1989, to be exact. It was our New Year’s program for that year.
Imagine my surprise when I found out that we talked about the U.S. wanting to annex Canada! As we said in that script, “Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose.”
Now, unfortunately, I need to get to the library to go back to the original 1888 paper for more information about this topic, so that will be the subject of next week’s column. This week, I want to talk about some other things from those newspapers 144 years ago.
We discussed some international news at the time. Britain was debating Home Rule for Ireland. Charles Parnell and his Irish Parliamentary Party held the balance of power in the........
