Gilberts: A look at pioneer days on the Thames River
This week, we continue our series on Kentiana, the book published by the Kent Historical Society in 1939.
This week, we continue our series on Kentiana, the book published by the Kent Historical Society in 1939. Its preface implies (though never actually says) that its chapters consist of papers published in one of the first six volumes of the society’s Papers and Addresses between 1914 and 1924, but I couldn’t find the chapter we’re looking at in my copies of Papers and Addresses.
I would like to mention two other things from the preface as well:

First, it says, “Another generation is now occupying the centre of the educational stage and it is the object of (Kentiana) to reach this younger generation . . .” Now, 87 years and several generations later, I guess the purpose of this series is similar. I want to give you the salient facts of the chapter, while bringing you up to date on the facts or attitudes that don’t meet the “sniff test” for 2026.
