Party season is pretty much over at Long Point

The last long weekend of the season has come and gone and the summer residents are packing up.

The last long weekend of the season has come and gone and the summer residents are packing up.

Oh they will be back sporadically as long as the good weather lasts, but party season is pretty much over.

Holiday weekends here on the island have a rhythm of their own. Late Thursday night and early Friday morning people start to arrive and there’s the sound of inflating rubber, chopping of kindling, generators firing up and the snarl of lawn mowers.

By Friday afternoon the boat is in the water, the kids are gluttonizing themselves, old lawn chairs fall apart and the dogs have checked to see if their territory has been re-marked.

That night the party starts and the place turns festive with improvised bands (some of them are good) fireworks and beer while old friends sit on porches and pick up a conversation they started in June.
