Over the summer, our preaching series at Grace Baptist will study the reality that we humans have been designed for friendship. And, one of the weeks I’ll be speaking on is friendship in marriage, a topic I’ve pursued and enjoyed for many years. We often hear husbands and wives declare, “I married my best friend.” But, sadly, it seems too many folks don’t really understand what friendship calls us to do and be.
I have watched the systematic dissolution of many married couples over my years in church ministry. All of them were good people, and often, there was no infidelity on either side. The reason they failed to keep their marriages together was not some cataclysmic event or circumstance. Rather, it was their failure to live up to the commitments they made to one another as they entered into the covenant of marriage. It boiled down to a gross misunderstanding of what commitment is and what it entails.
