Trump’s attempts to blame Renee Good for her own killing are a bridge too far

Marchers protest on Saturday in San Francisco against the shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis and the Trump administration’s invasion of Venezuela. 

While the American people have, by now, gotten used to the Trump administration’s gaslighting, transparent spin and outright misinformation, the rush to blame Renee Good for her own death after being shot by an ICE agent has set a new standard. 

Good, a 37-year-old mother of two, was shot and killed following a confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who were conducting a sweep of a Minneapolis neighborhood on Jan. 7. Since then, President Donald Trump and his minions, as if competing for the Golden Globe for Most Orwellian Explanation by a Government Official, have taken turns at reframing reality. 

Trump led the way with his surreal interpretation of one of the videos of the fatal encounter, saying Good “behaved horribly. And then she ran him over. She didn’t try to run him over. She ran him over.”

While there was indeed an officer in front of Good’s minivan as she accelerated and turned to flee a second ICE agent who was trying to open her door, video taken at the scene shows that Good did not run over either officer, nor did that appear to be her intent. 

Trump’s credibility sank further when he labeled Good as a “professional agitator,” but he was correct when he described her as “highly disrespectful” of the ICE agents terrorizing her community by searching out........
