4 lottery jackpots that expired unclaimed, from a $77 million Powerball to a $51.7 million share

Georgia, New York, California, and Indiana each sold a lottery ticket worth tens of millions of dollars that no one cashed before its deadline.

Matching every number on a lottery slip feels like the finish line, but collecting depends on the calendar. Every win carries an expiration date, and a fortune left in a drawer past that day turns into worthless paper. A Mega Millions player who bought a ticket in South Carolina pushed that limit with a $1.5 billion jackpot. The holder waited through 132 of the 180 days the rules allowed before stepping forward on March 4, 2019. The payout arrived as a one-time cash payment of $877 million, and the winner remains anonymous. A margin of 48 days separated that payday from a total loss.

Plenty of people never beat the clock. Americans forfeit about $2 billion in prizes every year, and New York alone left $103 million uncollected in 2015. The drain reaches past U.S. borders, too. Camelot claimed that U.K. citizens abandoned roughly £122.5 million between 2017 and 2018. A 180-day window turns up in several of the documented cases. Once a window shuts, the ticket owner gives up any right to the money, and an uncashed stub carries no more value than a losing one. Taken together, these figures describe a steady leak of cash that never reaches the people holding the winning numbers.

TheLotter published a list of nine unclaimed awards from the U.S., the U.K., and Canada. The page carries no publication date. It names no data provider, spells out no criteria for choosing or ordering the entries, and never presents the list as complete. Its entries come from five games: EuroMillions, Lotto Max, Powerball, Mega Millions, and SuperLotto Plus. Amounts appear in pounds, Canadian dollars, and U.S. dollars. Seven of the nine involve U.S. games. The oldest U.S. cases date to 2002, and the most recent ones expired in 2023 and 2024. This article examines four of those U.S. entries, the four with the highest dollar values, and presents them from biggest to smallest.
