Essential Characteristics of a Great Manager

Dozens of promising characteristics have been parlayed in the literature on managers. As an example, high on most lists is being visionary in forecasting new opportunities, a quality critical for launching revolutionary new products and services. Also, high on lists is the ability to innovate, managing people without harming them or the environment. Yet a critical characteristic is ethical standards. The absence of this management characteristic jeopardizes competitive industries, as illustrated by the classic collapse of Enron and the recent governance failures at Boeing. Toxic ethical lapses also occur when managers demoralize or destabilize work settings due to either malice or jealousy. Although these are flagrant examples, there are less visible but equally pernicious norms undermining settings that managers need to challenge to be better caretakers.
