Have you ever gone through a devastating heartbreak, a health scare, or a major life disruption, only for someone to tell you to "just look on the bright side"? It can feel incredibly dismissive. People generally are not trying to be hurtful when they make these statements; it is simply difficult for humans to watch someone else suffer. Because we desperately want to help, we default to offering quick fixes that might force a temporary smile.

However, there is a profound danger in denying our pain. Suppressing emotional agony is like painting over a rotting wall just to make it look better. Eventually, that suppressed pain will manifest as deep anxiety or physical illness later in life.

The Danger of Numbing the Ulcer

When I was in high school, I worked a full-time job in the fast-food industry while going to school. One of the perks of the job was unlimited free soda, and I drank massive amounts of caffeine just to stay awake.

One night, I woke up with a sensation that felt like a knife stuck in my stomach. A doctor diagnosed me with an ulcer.
