In the past, some of the French made disparaging remarks about the typical American diet and the prevalence of corpulence across the Atlantic Ocean. Now, they are eating their own words! Fast-food restaurants are taking France by storm, including the very hamburger restaurants that they used to spurn.
France is obsessed with fine food. School lunch programs are designed as culinary education programs in which children are treated like clients of three-star restaurants. None of this is cheap, but French voters believe that if children consume good-quality meals, they are more likely to mature into healthy adults. This faith in fine food seemed justified in decades past when the French public looked askance at corpulent American tourists with mega children in tow.
