On May 4, 2026, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., laid out a series of new federal guidelines regarding selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). There are four key pillars of these guidelines:
Strengthened informed consent: Patients need a clearer understanding of benefits and risks, including side effects and withdrawal symptoms.
More support for deprescribing: Clinicians need clearer guidance on tapering and helping people come off SSRIs safely.
Whole‑person, non‑drug first approach: Instead of using drugs as the first-line treatment for mild to moderate depression, begin with validated interventions, such as exercise, sleep, nutrition, and social connection.
Shorter prescribing windows: Instead of leaving people on SSRIs indefinitely, the guidelines encourage regular reassessment.
