Is It Time to See Dyslexia as a Superpower?
Most of us think we know what dyslexia is: a disorder that prevents people from reading well. The standard view in neurology is that it stems from a disruption of normal brain development that hurts the brain’s ability to process written language—for example, to connect sounds and symbols.
We're also familiar with the struggles that kids with dyslexia face in schools: difficulties in keeping up with homework, the need for remedial instruction, and the toll those can take on their self-esteem.
But what if this “deficit” picture is fundamentally wrong? What if dyslexia is a distinctive cognitive style with its own strengths? And what if a transformed paradigm would allow these kids to flourish—to realize their superpower?
This is the extraordinary claim made in a new documentary, "The Dyslexic Advantage," based on a book of the same title.
