Why It’s So Annoying to Be Told How Things Are

You know the type. They dominate a room with their conversation, holding forth opinions that are stated as if they are ontological truths. “All (women, men, Democrats, Republicans, immigrants, Americans, poor people, rich people, etc.) do this” or “This (inflation, crime, poverty, homelessness, global warming, etc.) will never be solved until….” It can feel like they’re verbally pointing their finger at you.

One part of me is seduced by such self-confidence. “Gee, they sound so sure of themselves; they must be right.” Another part of me shrinks in response to being told how things are. It’s like they’re coming down from Mt. Sinai with revealed........
