Late in his career, Carl Rogers, the father of active listening, admitted something that has always haunted me. He regretted how his work had been hollowed out into a "technique." He never intended for us to settle for the nodding, the mechanical paraphrasing, or the scripted "What I hear you saying is..." responses that are now frequently used in corporate "soft skills" workshops.
Rogers wasn't looking for a checklist. He was describing a way of being: a raw, non-judgmental presence rooted in the courage to let yourself be changed by the person sitting across from you.
I think about this constantly now that we’ve entered the age of artificial intelligence. We have finally built the "perfect" listener. These systems are never tired, never impatient, and never judgmental. But in perfecting the behavior of listening, we may have inadvertently killed its soul.
