The Importance of Reporting Suspected Child Abuse
There are penalties for not reporting. Depending on the state where you live, failing to report child abuse as a mandatory reporter (MR) has consequences. Penalties vary considerably and may result in jail time, a fine, or both. In most states, failure to report suspected child maltreatment is considered a criminal offense. For example, if you live in South Dakota, failure to report may result in a Class 1 Misdemeanor; however, if you reside in Florida, failure to report may result in a third-degree felony. Checking your state laws periodically is critical because they change, and if you provide online therapy in more than one state, you are responsible for knowing the laws in all of those states.
