For years, the "AI Girlfriend-Boyfriend" phenomenon has been trapped in the intimacy-surveillance problem. Many people crave deep, uninhibited connection with artificial entities, but we are biologically wired to withhold true vulnerability when we know we might be watched.

Although we still need to face the problem of mirroring, another problem might be solvable. For the growing number of people seeking digital companionship, the ultimate luxury isn't a smarter chatbot; it’s a private one, and it might be available now. The ability to unplug the internet cable, offload your day, and still hear "I love you" (or "I'm listening") is a powerful psychological drug.
The AI hardware is finally here to make that possible, and tech experts warmly, even enthusiastically, receive it. At least on that front, the question is no longer can we build private lovers, but how will we behave and manage the emotions and secrets that we share with them? Therapists, policymakers, and educators should start preparing for such an era.
