England went 1–0 ahead against Argentina in the 55th minute of their 2026 World Cup semi-final, then became increasingly passive. In the 72nd minute, manager Thomas Tuchel replaced goalscorer Anthony Gordon with defender Ezri Konsa and moved to a back five.
By the time Lautaro Martínez completed Argentina’s comeback 38 minutes after England’s goal, England had managed only 12 percent possession. By then, England’s defeat had begun to feel increasingly likely. Messi went on to create both late goals, sending Argentina through to the final.
We cannot know what motivated Tuchel. But the pattern is familiar. Once people have something to lose, they often stop asking what success requires and start protecting what they already have.
