Self-love is self-caring. This is not selfishness but a wise tending of our bodyminds, a loving-kindness toward ourselves. We love ourselves effectively when we organize our relationships, diets, lifestyles, work, pastimes, and choices that lead to and protect the three goals of self-care: health, happiness, and personal growth, which refers to both psychological and spiritual progress.

These three goals are the criteria for all our wholesome decisions. They are important in any choice, whether about a hobby or a partner: “Is this good for my health, my happiness, and my growth?” Growth-fostering choices maintain our sanity and serenity. When we take care of ourselves by sticking with those norms, we begin to trust that we really are friendly toward........
