US-Style Health Care Is Wrong for the UK

BERKELEY – The United Kingdom is in the throes of a maternal-health crisis. The rate at which women die while trying to give life has been steadily rising over the past 15 years. On top of this, a joint investigation by the BBC and the New Statesman recently revealed that poor maternity care at the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust has resulted in the preventable deaths of dozens of infants. The country is clearly failing to protect some of its most vulnerable citizens: pregnant and postpartum women and their babies.
