Driving down Belcher Street at 9 p.m., I’m using my favourite quiet route to avoid traffic. But there is still some. A vehicle, coming from the opposite direction, appears to have four bright headlights.

I can’t see the yellow line. I can’t tell if the road is curving, so my foot lifts off the gas pedal. The edge of the street is obliterated by all the blinding light being emitted by what turns out to be a pick-up truck. Is this what we have to live with?
Granted most of us are over retirement age, but a bunch of my pals refuse to drive at night anymore. They feel unsafe in the glare and I can’t blame them. So, I was chuffed just recently to read that city councils in both Vancouver and Victoria, B.C., have passed motions calling on the federal government to address overly bright vehicle headlights.
Both mayors are writing letters to Transport Canada urging action that will address excessive headlight brightness, including updates to national vehicle safety standards.
From what I’ve read, LED headlights on newer vehicles are genuinely brighter and bluer than the warmer old-style halogen lights on the cars people grew up with. This........
