WENDY ELLIOTT: Backtracking on some budget cuts not good enough
Premier Tim Houston walked back a portion of his nasty cuts last week. Cuts impacting the elderly, disabled, Indigenous and African Nova Scotian communities were outright cruel. But we can’t go out and celebrate when there are still savage cuts ahead.

Wildlife preservation, climate change initiatives, arts, culture, museums and the public service do matter. I don’t think that citizens of this province, who got out and protested, are going to placidly accept a little roll back when a lot more is called for.
Houston wanted us to think he was listening and even that he cares, but he doesn’t have the acting ability to pull off that broad of a character reversal.
Instead, folks are now digging into what’s being viewed as Conservative financial mismanagement and catering to elites. For example, the premier’s decision to provide $1 million in funding to Sail N.S. to sponsor a SailGP race in the Halifax Harbour, while at the same time cutting funding to the Bluenose II, surely reeks of hypocrisy.
After the furor of recent weeks, I would like to see musician Ben Caplan as premier. He spoke so eloquently at the March 10 rally in Halifax about a super majority spending without accountability and the arts being our soul.
In February 2025, auditor general Kim Adair called for accountability on $1.38 billion of government over-budget spending.
A CTV story indicated Adair had repeatedly called for changes to the province’s Finance Act to better align with best practices employed by other provincial governments where legislatures are required to review, vote on and approve any........
