One came from my oldest son Jacob in December 2016.
Another from my youngest son Justin many years before that.
And the other one from my Grandmere Regina Comeau who lived in Meteghan.
Jacob’s gift was absolutely perfect. The contents inside that small wrapped box spoke to practicality and memories, and it showed me my son, who was 18 at the time, was paying attention to my life.
He had bought the gift with money he had made in his first month as a lobster fisherman on our family’s boat, which is aptly named Jacob’s Journey. Lobster fishing is hard work, and I was so proud of how well he was doing.
Inside the box was a black knitted toque and a pair of grey gloves. The toque and gloves reminded me of the years Jacob and I spent together in rinks when he played hockey. We had so many wonderful memories spanning over a decade, from the time we laced up his skates for the first time in Timbits hockey when he was five, to when he skated off the ice as a YCMHS Viking after his last game of high school hockey in Grade 12.
