HISTORICALLY SPEAKING WITH ED COLEMAN: Mi’kmaq contributed much to hockey

It was a first in Canada when Dartmouth’s Starr Manufacturing Company began making skates in the early 1860s.

In an article about the company 20 some years ago, I wrote that as well as skates for recreation, Starr also produced a special line of hockey skates. I neglected to note that Starr also marketed hockey sticks that were handmade by the Mi’kmaq.

At one time, the sticks were sold Canada-wide by the T. Eaton Company Ltd.

In the fall and winter issue in 1904, for example, Eaton offered four models of hockey sticks under the Mic-Mac brand name.

I was aware that the Mi’kmaq had made sticks used in hockey but that’s about it. Then I came upon Frank Toney’s involvement.
