COMMENTARY: Retired politicians speak out in favour of a P.E.I. basic income demonstration

For the past five years we, the undersigned, retired politicians from three parties, have been involved with the P.E.I. project. We joined with public servants, advocates, and economists who came together to see if we could define the goals and process of a federal/provincial basic income demonstration project in P.E.I. The purpose of the project is to explore an economically and administratively feasible way of alleviating poverty as well as finding ways to help navigate disruptions to employment such as presented by AI or the restructuring of economic alliances.

Most people agree that poverty alleviation would be a good thing. There are many suggestions for how to do this, but we would like to name three:

Create a full employment economy.

Create an income targeted basic income floor.

Continue to focus on program focused support: welfare, food insecurity, housing, pharmacare, dental care, disability, youth and more
