COMMENTARY: P.E.I. customers want electricity they're paying for

Congratulations to the provincial government and Maritime Electric for a solution to our energy woes. We can now take our place with countries like Haiti and Cuba, where electricity rationing is common.

The Hon. Gilles Arsenault, minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Action, accepted a report 10 years out of date regarding energy projects and self-sufficiency. Did no one in government think that an increase in building, combined with a generous helping of free heat pumps and (for those who could afford them) rebates for electric vehicles, might lead to a larger demand for electricity? What was Maritime Electric doing while these “plans” were being developed?

Well, solutions – one solution  mentioned for P.E.I.’s energy needs is another cable – but to where? We get most of our electricity from New Brunswick – but New Brunswick is starting to feel the same pinch as us. Actually, of all things, N.B. signed an agreement this past fall with the Irving Corporation to purchase electricity from their wind farm under construction. Do you think........
