Last year, I wrote a different opinion piece, concerned that society was barreling down the hill too quickly with generative artificial intelligence (AI). One year later, I am even more certain that education and strong policies are greatly needed.

If you are concerned about AI, know that you are not alone. In October 2025, Canadian lawyers, advocacy groups and human rights bodies wrote an open letter stating that the federal government’s AI strategy consultation process “suggests serious disregard for the Canadian public’s known and wide-ranging concerns about the demonstrated risks and harms of technologies currently classified as AI.”

Abacus Data reported in 2025 that more Canadians see AI as a potential threat (61 per cent), rather than as a tool to improve life (39 per cent). There are also valid concerns to be had at the provincial level.
