COMMENTARY: Greater transparency needed at the Canada Revenue Agency

Two new bills in Parliament would finally shine more light on tax cheats and secret corporate tax write offs: the Fairness for All Canadian Taxpayers Act and a bill that would create a debt forgiveness registry. The former has passed the Senate and awaits passage in the House of Commons, while the other, passed in the House, now awaits Senate approval.

The first, introduced by Sen. Percy Downe, will require the government to disclose all convictions for tax evasion and to publish estimates of the tax gap — the difference between the aggregate taxes assessed and what is collected.
