COMMENTARY: A P.E.I. producer’s view of film funding

Also sparked is a production investment of $30 million to be split between Toronto locations and studios, and in P.E.I. where half the story is set. The production is gearing up to shoot early this summer on the Island.

That said, every production has a financial structure that must be met to move forward. And in this case, the last part required is a commitment by P.E.I. to invest through tax credits and/or a labour rebate. However, due to the exceptionally large scale of the project, and departing from standard arm’s length protocols, Premier Rob Lantz says he must make the final call whether the production will take place on P.E.I., as “due diligence” is required in assessing: the economic spin-offs of the series to the province, the development of P.E.I.’s growing film industry, and jobs created.

Certainly, elsewhere in Canada, with more experience, this is a smoother process for this multi-billion dollar industry. Hopefully, the production soon finds support from the province,........
