COMMENTARY: A New Year's resolution for P.E.I.: Invest in youth

I love this strange, quiet week between the holidays. It’s a pause that invites reflection (sometimes uncomfortably so) because it means looking backward and forward at the same time. It includes taking stock of the year that was while feeling the weight of the one to come. I’ve learned to welcome that pause, even when it makes me uneasy, because it reminds me to focus on what really matters.

As we head into a new year, one priority keeps rising to the surface for me: The future of Prince Edward Island depends on how well we enable and empower our young people.

Just two days before Christmas, a member of my team texted to ask if I’d be in the office. “You don’t have to ask me if I’m working!” I snapped, as he dragged his butt into the office around noon. “I’m always working!” “Merry Christmas to you too, fine sir,” he shot back. And instantly I realized that I sounded like the kind of boss who deserves a visit from three Christmas ghosts. Humbug.

Maybe the Santa suit I wear all December sends mixed signals. I may not promise constant jolliness, but like Scrooge, I try to “honour Christmas all year” by caring deeply about the future we’re building. It sometimes........
