I had sat it on its wireless charger, but it was off-centre just enough that it hadn’t been connected.

With an exasperated grumble, I heaved myself out of my seat and headed for the door. Our nine-year-old cairn terrier, Dax, trotting in my wake.

Dax had plopped her small frame down next to me and made a plaintive little cry announcing to the world that she needed a walk. So, I did the first thing I always do when I take her out – I reached for my phone.

Actually, these days, that is pretty much my first move before I do anything.

Washing dishes? Phone.
